Participants will enjoy studying in Salzburg, Austria, considered one of the most beautiful and safest cities in the world. Salzburg College is a small, private college where classroom work, field study and academic travel complement one another. Located in the KunstQuartier (ArtQuarter), the college is in the heart of Salzburg’s new town.

The summer internship program at Salzburg College gives students the opportunity to internship in their specific academic area of interest while immersing themselves in a new culture and country. The first half of the program prepares students for the international working environment they will experience during their career building and résumé enhancing internship.

Location

The birthplace of Mozart and a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site, Salzburg has a rich and vibrant heritage that is reflected in its many concerts, festivals and events. The Mozart Festival, Salzburg Festival, Christkindlesmarkt (Christmas Market) and the Sound of Music are just a few examples of why people all around the world visit Salzburg. For a more modern appeal, Salzburg is also home to the Austrian company, Red Bull, and its Hanger-7 where the Flying Bulls aircraft fleet and Formula 1 race cars are stored.

Participants will not only take in the sights on various excursions in Salzburg but will also have the opportunity to enjoy a field trip to Munich as well as the convenience of close proximity to other European cities such as Paris, Berlin, Venice, Prague and more.

Accommodation and Meals

Students reside in a residence hall with kitchenettes. Grocery stores, markets, pharmacies, coffee shops and restaurants are all in easy walking distance.

Students will be responsible for their meal costs. Though the individual spending habits of each student will vary, please see the budget information below for an estimate of the average out-of-pocket meal expenses.

Program Travel

Students will arrange their own round-trip travel to Salzburg and will be provided with suggested flight dates and arrival times. For budgeting purposes, estimates are provided below. Students who wish to have the cost of their flight billed directly to their MU accounts should contact the Director of Study Abroad to make arrangements through MU’s preferred travel agency. Transportation from the Salzburg airport to Salzburg College will be provided. Once in Salzburg, all program-related travel is included in the program fee.

Academics

Salzburg College offers an academic and applied learning program. Students complete three courses followed by four weeks of immersion in a full-time internship. Students are required to take a German language course (no prior German language knowledge is required), “The European Experience,” “Intercultural Communication,” as well as participate in special internship meetings.  Salzburg College works closely with students before and during their first few weeks in Austria to select and individualized internship placement that best fits their academic, personal and language needs.

Students will be enrolled in 12 credits of AFNR _0590, an International Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources “placeholder” course. This “placeholder” will transfer back to MU as the following courses graded on an A/F basis (except for the internship, which is graded as S/U).

• Academic session credits: AFNR 2190 (3 credits): International Agriculture and Natural Resources,  AFNR 2191 (3 credits): International Agriculture and Natural Resources—Humanities, and COMM ELEC 3000 Level (3 credits): Intercultural Leadership Development.
• Internship credits: AFNR 4993 (3 credits): Internship in Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources

Students must complete a Course Proposal for Study Abroad with assistance from the CAFNR Director of Study Abroad. Once this is completed, students will work with their advisors to determine how the credits will count toward their individual graduation plans.

Please be aware that there will be a mandatory orientation class meeting prior to departure. The meeting typically occurs in April. Date and time for the meeting will be available shortly after the confirmed program participant list is finalized, generally around mid-March. Participants will be notified of the meeting details via email.
